On a hot sunday, with the help of almost 30 students, the installation of 'Life is Beautiful in Samphrang' was done.

With almost 200 pieces of artwork, our small space looked even smaller. But it took us back in time and provided real nostalgic pleasure.

Life is Beautiful in Samphrang

SAMPHRANG has remained one of the most well-preserved qaurters of Bangkok where ordinary ways of life, not pretentious ones created solely for tourist purposes, can still be found. The first groups of inhabitants occupied the area since the early Rattanakosin era and the place became the most flourishing trade quarter during the reigns of King Rama V and VI.

After the Siamese Revolution of 1932, many governmental units were situated around the area resulting in variety of great restaurants to serve government officials. Nevertheless, when many of those units were moved away elsewhere, the place lost its liveliness and revenue.

It is true that many things have changed since then but many people chose to stay and adjust themselves as best as they could to survive in the new condition - though with less vibrancy but full of simplicity and sustainability.

Thus, Samphrang is still regarded today as a great food district with the mixture of both old and new traits. So, life in Samphrang surpasses the change and continues to impress people with its sincere and simple charm.

Still, to really understand this historic qauarter, one needs to pay great attention to small details which would be easily overlooked if he/she just passes by and not sees through.

To record some aspects of those details, architectural students of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang were assigned to observe the ongoing yet persisting life in Samphrang. They were warmly welcomed and captured by the community's charm which were portrayed through a great number of works in forms of architectural delineation, fotomo and fototrace.

We are with hopes that through various aspects of perception of these young artists, our viewers will see through that Life is Beautiful in Samphrang.

Architectural Delineation

Architectural delineation is a technique to indicate or represent with accuracy or in detail by drawn or painted lines. This skill is a basis in practicing eyes, brain and hands to see how they work together. By doing this, the students are urged to experience life as well as architectural details at first hand. Along the process of seeing and selecting things they want to study, they will learn about the great thing called 'inspiration' as well.

Fotomo

Fotomo is a kind of model in three dimensions originated by the Japanese photographer Kimio Itozaki. The artist makes use of photographs by cuting them in pieces and recomposs them in three dimensions.

This technique is in a way a solution to portray reality more correctly. Photography, despite its realistic trait, can express reality only in two dimensions, while general models, despite their three-dimentional quality, lack for details as seen in photograps. Thus, by combining the two together, foto and model, the real world comes closer as if the viewer is really there.

Fototrace

Fototrace is a way to trace a photo. By tracing the chosen photo line by line, the tracer will be forced to face with the subject of his/her own choice in slow motion which will enable the person to see more deeply of what he/she might spend just a second recording in photo.

Its main aim is to make students see, think and express sincerely and also demands them, as future architects, to pay attention not only to architectural details but also to life.

Fototrace is thus an effort to 'rejuvenate' or 'broaden' the eyes of the students with the belief that when they see and feel life, they will design a place that serve that life not just a lifeless construction.

It is a duty of an architect or any artists to see and feel what is out there. Especially for architects whose creations have great responsibility both to the people and their surrounding, they need to open their eyes and to be sensitive to life - value it, cherish it, ortherwise, their work is a kind of violation and not different from a crime whether they realise it or not.

The Colonel's Nightly Visit to Ponil Park

People Space would like to invite you all to “Narrative Tableaux”, a new exhibition by the American photographer Dan Overturf.

These narrative tableaux images included in this exhibit represent a small collection from a series that he started in the early 1990’s. Recently he has returned to the body of work and made new images in anticipation of exhibiting the work for the first time as an isolated series.

Since 1998 the artist has been actively making documentary images and completing a number of long-term projects. The narrative imagery had been set aside since but the work and the spirit in the images still hold a large measure of vitality for him. In his way of thinking, the definitions between the found (documentary) and the fabricated (narrative) have always felt very flexible and the two remain related. Both genres are rooted in the aspect of photography and life that fascinates him most: story.

Father's Day in Uncle Swilling's Workshop

His photographic narrative tableaux have always been built on a synthesis of literary, visual and anecdotal sources. They were, in effect, investigations that allude to, and/or toy with traditional storytelling formats. He has been working in this area since 1979. With the later work included here he had the opportunity to expand both the physical and thematic boundaries of the work.

The work stems from an eclectic range of possible beginnings. These range from an obscure text entitled, Narratives of Remarkable Criminal Trials by Anslem Ritter von Feuerbach (1846), to an observation made by a neighbor who works the late shift at a local hospital. Fully intentional art history references abound as well. Many of the gestures found in paintings from the Renaissance period have inspired segments of the images.

These sources initiate rather crude drawings or sketches that lead to overall themes or just small portions of the eventual images. The images created on elaborate sets, which often take months to complete, were built for the sole purpose of making a single photograph. The images were executed on set, in the camera, with no post-production manipulation or additions of imagery. The artist chooses to work this way since he finds the visceral quality of creating or altering an existing environment for the sole purpose of making a photograph most rewarding. The pleasure is in the complexity of the pre-production, set design and construction, lighting design, prop creation/selection, and directing the participants when all is ready for the final version.

All images were made on either black and white or color film with a variety of cameras including Hasselblad, Linhof 6x17 and A Roundshot 220.

The rain keeps falling down through the month of May but that hasn't stopped people from coming to our small space to view the photo exhibition 'In the Shadow of Time of Rong Wongsawan' and participate in our activities. The big amount of the audience made it seem like there was a mob at our gallery. The air-conditioner downstair too breathed like it was the last span of her life. Only those who were lucky enough to get a space upstair could enjoy the cooler breeze.

This very welcoming response made People Space, openbooks and friends decide to expand the period of the exhibition until the end of June. In addition to the photographs on Rong Wongsawan by Tawatchai Pattanaporn, you will see 'Bridge' - a new set of photographs by Rong Wongsawan that you've never seen before.

Moreover, there are interesting events through all the month.

Until today, Rong Wongsawan has passed away for almost a month. He left before the incredible chaos erupted in Bangkok , starting from the Royal Thai Government House and expanding around the metropolis, especially in the inner of Rattanakosin Island . As People Space is situated in Phrang Phuton, the location surrounded by violence at the time, we then feared whether the exhibition for Khun Rong could be held as planned.

When peace has been secured, even though temporarily, we are happy to tell you all that through this May, People Space, a more-than-100-year old shop house, will be transformed, with help from our friends, to be an exhibit space for photographs taken by Rong Wongsawan, which will be called ‘In the Shadow of Time of Rong Wongsawan’.

Apart from images of an important figure as M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, there are photographs of the old Bangkok which are rarely seen. Although many years have passed, those pictures are still vivid and astonishing until today.

Added with Khun Rong’s portraits taken by Tawatchai Pattanaporn, a young-blood photographer whose work in the book called Teekerdhead has been much praised, the exhibition is complete.

All the work in this exhibition is large-size black-and-white photographs printed by hand in the old-fashioned way that retains all details usually overlooked by the new digital technology.

'In the Shadow of Time of Rong Wongsawan’ will be opened on Friday 1 May 2009 from 6 pm onward, where you will meet various thinkers, writers, critics and editors talking on the topic In Memory of Rong Wongsawan.

I Just want to share some experience I've gained through photography.
I believe that through the portraits of those great people, we can recall good faith.
And through pictures of leaves and trees I always took along the way, we would realise that either near or far, each journay makes us perceive beauty ... only if we stop and pay attention to the surrounding.

Tatree Sangmee-Anuphab

Tatree Sangmee-Arnupharb graduated from the Faculty of Mass Communication, CHiamg Mai University. He started his career as a freelance photographer in Chiang Mai. At the end of 2005, he joined the staff of Open Magazine. After Open, he worked for various magazines such as a day weekl, Ta-Jia-Hao and Kor Kon.

During that period, Tatree earned much experience which was portrayed through many photographs he took both for publiscation and for personal satisfaction.

Most of his work are portraits of persons who he tries best to capture their personality truthfully.

While in his relaxed time, the same camera also captures the personality of surrouded nature with honesty.

Thus beyond sheets of photographic paper and frames, From Portraits on the Wall to Leaves and Flowers on the Street represents what Tatree sees and feels deep from his heart.

Paradise Thailand is the first collaboration between an independent scholar, Sarinee Achavanuntakul, and a very keen artist, Angkrit Ajchariyasophon.

While Sarinee criticizes her society fervently, Angkrit, after reading those poems, cannot stop his alerted imagination resulting in almost 50 diverse paintings.

Paradise Thailand thus represents the creative force of those two people.
Come and read their illustrated poetry and see whether our country is like what they say.

Death by Conscience

These dolls are not a representation of human beings.
They are a representation of all that’s killed by conscience.
They are desires shackled within the deepest reaches of the human heart.
They are thoughts and impulses deemed criminal or inappropriate to society.
Before they are given a chance to breathe, they are executed.
Killed by ourselves; murdered by conscience.
Death before Birth.

Through almost 100 ceramic dolls, Chananun Chotrungroj will take us to the other world - the world of (dead) thoughts. Our artist also invites her friend, Kirsten Tan, a young-blood filmmaker from Singapore to share this experience through her video art.

Chananun Chotrungroj graduated from the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University. Since then she worked as photographer for OPEN Magazine for several years before taking off to Korea in 2005 to participate in the Asian Artist Fellowship Program. After a year in Korea, she headed back to Bangkok where she now lives and continues to photograph joyfully. Death by Conscience is the last work before she leaves to further her study in the US.

From the Wild to Paris
A shared path of two photographers

People Space is a new gallery located in the heart of the old town of Bangkok. Until present, we have organized two exhibitions: Paper by Wisut Ponnimit and Mind’s Eye: Collections of Hand-Coloured Black and White Photographs by Chaipong Kittinaradorn.

Our coming exhibition, From the Wild to Paris, will open on this Saturday 12 July. The exhibition covers photographic works of two photographers, M.L. Prinyakorn Voravan and Supachai Ketkaroonkul. Despite disparity in contents, they both share the same path of documentary photography.

Using different kinds of lens and telling different stories, they both have the same kind of heart - the one that is eager to learn and understand our world.

Talking about wild life photography, M.L. Prinyakorn Voravan is one among those very few who dedicate their life for it. He has been in the wilderness taking those pictures of wild animals and their nature home for more than 20 years. Although he is a descendant of hunters, unlike his ancestors, his only weapon is a camera and not a rifle. His philosophy has changed from hunting to storytelling.

Still, despite long period of working, M.L Prinyakorn has never exhibited his work anywhere (in Thailand). At most, he has a picture book called Spirit of the Jungle published many years ago.

The other photographer is Supachai Ketkaroonkul. He graduated from the Faculty of Liberal Arts majoring in Film from Thammasat University. His black-and-white portraits are important parts for Open Magazine in its beginning phrase. The beauty he conveys through his lens is raw but not savage. It is documentary reality coated with poetic tenderness.

Supachai left Bangkok for Paris years ago to further his master education. When finished, he flied back home and still works as a photographer.

It is true that the story of Paris has been told over and over again for it is never a forgotten or unnoticed city. But once more, we will see Paris, in many different views, through the eyes of a Thai photographer who fell in love and lived with her for 6 years.

From the Wild to Paris aims to represent never-ending stories of both the wilderness and the city, two things that seem to be far apart but in fact tightly relate to one another. In the wild, there is life not different from in the city and as nature keeps balance for all life, what happens in the wild will eventually reach the city. This is why we have to travel so far From the Wild to Paris to learn from nature and understand more of our existence.

- สำหรับผู้ที่สนใจอยากลงลึกเรื่องการลงสีภาพด้วยมือ ศิลปิน-ชัยพงษ์ กิตตินราดร จะมาบรรยายและสอนภาคปฏิบัติ ครบถ้วนตั้งแต่ต้นจบจบว่าทำภาพลงสีด้วยมือเขาทำกันอย่างไร (โดยศิลปินจะเตรียมภาพถ่ายขาว-ดำสำหรับลงสีไว้ให้)

"ผมไม่เคยปฏิเสธว่าโลกนี้เต็มไปด้วยสีสัน
แต่ในฐานะคนที่หลงใหลในการถ่ายภาพ
และด้วยรสนิยมส่วนตัวที่ไม่ชอบผิวสัมผัสที่เป็นวิทยาศาสตร์
บนกระดาษถ่ายภาพที่ได้มาจากเนกาตีฟสี
หรือแม้แต่ที่พิมพ์จากสไลด์โดยตรง
ผมรักที่จะลงสีบนภาพถ่ายขาวดำด้วยตนเองมากกว่า
สื่อและสีหลายชนิดถูกนำมาใช้
เพียงเพื่อให้ได้ภาพตามจินตนาการที่ปรารถนา

ในโลกสมัยใหม่ที่อะไรๆ ดูจะรวดเร็วไปเสียหมด
งานอดิเรกที่ต้องทำอย่างเนิบช้าเริ่มจะให้ความรื่นรมย์ไม่ทันใจ
เราหันไปเสพความบันเทิงทางโทรทัศน์ที่มีหยิบยื่นให้แบบวินาทีต่อวินาทีเพียงแค่จรดนิ้วกดปุ่มรีโมตคอนโทรล

ทุกวันเราเร่งรีบและเสพติดเทคโนโลยีที่ทำให้เราประหยัดเวลา
โดยหารู้ไม่ว่าเวลาที่เราได้คืนมากลับถูกใช้ไปอย่างว่างเปล่าและหมดเปลือง
และเทคโนโลยีที่หวังว่าจะช่วยให้ชีวิตเราง่ายขึ้น หลายครั้งกลับทำให้ชีวิตเราซับซ้อน
ลึกๆ เราจึงโหยหาความเรียบง่ายสามัญแบบที่ครั้งหนึ่งเราเคยมีหรือหวังว่าจะมี

ชัยพงษ์ กิตตินราดร เป็นผู้ที่เข้าใจความจริงข้อนี้อย่างลึกซึ้ง

ในโลกที่ศิลปะการถ่ายภาพเคลื่อนที่ไปสู่ความเป็นดิจิตอลด้วยเทคนิคทางวิทยาศาสตร์อันก้าวไกล
ชัยพงษ์และผองเพื่อนต่างวัยรวมตัวกันภายใต้ชื่อกลุ่ม Black and White Rhapsodies Group
ในเว็บไซต์ www.bwfoto.net ของพวกเขา ประกาศชัดว่า “no digital cameras here”
เหตุก็เพราะพวกเขาหลงใหลในการถ่ายภาพขาว-ดำแบบดั้งเดิม
ที่ตัวผู้ถ่ายต้องควบคุมทุกขั้นตอนของการสร้างสรรค์ ตั้งแต่การถ่าย ล้าง และอัดรูป

ชัยพงษ์เชื่อว่า “ความจริงสีขาวและสีดำเป็นของที่พื้นที่สุด”

ถึงอย่างนั้น ในปัจจุบัน การถ่ายภาพขาว-ดำกลายเป็นเรื่องของความสนใจเฉพาะกลุ่ม
กล้องดิจิตอลที่มีอยู่ดาษดื่นทำให้ขั้นตอนการสร้างสรรค์ของภาพขาว-ดำดูยุ่งยาก
ด้วยคิดว่าถ่ายเป็นไฟล์ดิจิตอล - จะโหลดก็ง่าย ล้างอัดก็สบายกว่ากันเยอะ
ศิลปะในการถ่ายภาพที่ผู้สร้างงานต้องดูแลทุกขั้นตอนด้วยตัวเองจึงกลายเป็นความซับซ้อน

แต่ครั้งหนึ่งภาพขาว-ดำคือความสามัญ
และหากต้องการให้ภาพมีสีสันแบบเดียวกับที่ตาเห็นในธรรมชาติ
ก็เพียงแค่เอาสีแต้มลงไปบนภาพถ่ายขาว-ดำเหล่านั้นเพื่อให้เกิดความสมจริง
ขั้นตอนอันเรียบง่ายละเอียดละออ หลอมรวมงานศิลปะและการฝีมือเอาไว้ด้วยกันได้อย่างกลมกลืน

และนั่นกลายเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของ ภาพลงสีด้วยมือ หรือ Hand-coloured black-and-white photographs

แม้การเกิดขึ้นของฟิล์มเนกาตีฟสีจะทำให้ศาสตร์การลงสีภาพด้วยมือจางหายไป
แต่ยังมีช่างภาพจำนวนหนึ่งที่หลงใหลในเสน่ห์เฉพาะตัวของภาพ Hand-coloured นี้
วิธีในการทำงานอาจจะไม่ต่างจากเดิมเท่าใดนัก แต่วัตถุประสงค์ได้เปลี่ยนไปอย่างสิ้นเชิง
การลงสีภาพด้วยมือมิได้เป็นไปเพื่อการเลียนแบบธรรมชาติอย่างสมจริงอีกต่อไป
หากแต่เพื่ออิสระแห่งจินตนาการ
เป็นการทำงานของร่างกายและจิตใจที่สัมพันธ์กันอย่างแนบแน่น
ความคิดและความรู้สึกถ่ายทอดตัวตนของผู้สร้างสรรค์งานผ่านสีสันที่บรรจงแต่งแต้มทีละน้อย
หากจะเปรียบกล้องถ่ายรูปเป็นร่างกาย ภาพถ่ายก็คือสิ่งที่ดวงตาในจิตใจของผู้ถ่ายมองเห็นนั่นเอง

Finally, it is time to bring home your portrait.
Our simple rules are:
1. There are 4 groups of portraits in total, each divided into 72 small pieces with numbers clearly attached.
2. As some people may share the same piece, they can negotiate to divide the piece and pay half price instead.
3. To book your portrait, just leave your full name, contact number and email address -- indicating the group and numbers you want -- in the comment box below.

P.S. For those whose face or figure occupy too many pieces which means quite expensive price, we will make reduction. (The regulation will be updated later.)

If you enjoyed our first portrait night, don't forget to join our second portrait drawing on this coming Saturday 3 May from 8 pm.

The rain may fall and it may be crowded but this kind of event does not take place everyday :-)

People Space would like to invite everyone to attend "Paper : Live Portrait Drawing" on 19 April 2008 (8 pm onwards). In this casual event, our artist, Wisut Ponnimit, will draw portraits of every participant.

However, due to the fact that our space is not so big, we have to limit numbers of participants to 30 people.
